POPULIS is our system that allows us to determine rates. Many studies look from a facility-based approach (i.e. who shows up at a particular facility). Thus, they only look at the users in our system. MCHP's research data repository enables us to look at the health status of populations and their use of health care services; in other words, we also “count” those who do not show up at facilities, giving a population-based rate of use. As well, regardless of where usage occurs, we attribute it back to the region in which the person lives. This is important since people often travel to receive health care, especially in rural and northern Manitoba. Attributing all care back to the region of residence reveals patterns of health care service use of the entire population within a region.
