Mark Smith is the Associate Director of the Repository at the Manitoba Center for Health Policy where he oversees the acquisition of more than 80 different provincial government administrative and survey databases annually. He has extensive experience in health research with expertise in surveillance and privacy, He is also a research scientist at MCHP and has participated on a number of Public Health Agency of Canada chronic disease surveillance committees including the National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS) where he was co-chair of the Scientific Committee from 2005-2008, the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System Scientific Working Group (2009-present), the Hypertension Outcomes and Surveillance Team (2005-2010), and as past co-chair of the Mental Health Surveillance Advisory Committee (2009-2013). He has participated in numerous pan-Canadian research projects including the high profile At Home/Chez Soi Research Demonstration Project in Homelessness and Mental Health (2009-2013) and more recently the 5-province investigation of mental health performance indicators led by Dr. Elliot Goldner (2016). Finally, Mark has participated in or led on several PHAC-funded case definition validation projects including studies of Diabetes, Stroke, Cardiovascular disease, Hypertension, Asthma/COPD, and Mental Health (Anxiety and Depression).
