Introduction

    This concept describes the methods used to define Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in MCHP research.

Research Definitions and Algorithms

    In the Health Status of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Manitoba deliverable, by Chateau et al. (2019), they defined Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder as the percent of individuals with one of the following diagnoses:

    • one or more hospitalizations in one year with a diagnosis of COPD (ICD-9-CM codes 490, 491, 492, 493, 496; ICD-10-CA codes J40-J45), or
    • one or more physician visits in one year with a diagnosis of COPD (ICD-9-CM codes as above).
