Definition:
Removal of part or all of a body part enclosed by skin. In the First Nations Report (Martens et. al., 2002), amputation was defined as any hospitalization for a lower limb amputation (ICD-9-CM of 84.40, 84.45-84.48 present in any procedure field) where the ICD-9-CM diagnosis was '250' in any diagnostic field, that is, with diabetes comorbidity.
