Definition:

Mastectomy is the surgical removal of the entire breast, usually to treat serious breast disease, such as breast cancer. Lumpectomy (breast conserving surgery) involves the removal of a malignant tumor and the surrounding margin of normal breast tissue; lymph nodes in the armpit (axilla) may also be removed. See MedlinePlus® Health Topics - Mastectomy for more information.

MCHP has used the following ICD-9-CM procedure codes for identifying breast conserving surgery, breast ablative surgery, and excision of breast lesions: ICD-9-CM codes 85.43-85.48.
