Definition:

The 9th version of the ICD (International Classification of Disease) coding system, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) that is used to classify diseases, health conditions and procedures. This version was used by Vital Statistics to code the cause of death (mortality) on the death certificate (also known as the Medical Certificate of Death). As of January 1, 2000, Vital Statistics is using ICD-10 to code cause of death.
