Definition:

The extent to which a newly derived measurement correlates with a "gold standard" (i.e., generally accepted as accurate) value, measured at the same point in time. For example, hospital inpatient admissions recorded in the hospital discharge abstracts data are generally accepted as "gold standard" measures. Hospital admissions recorded in the newly obtained Emergency Department (ED) database were compared to these "gold standard" measures, for each patient during the study period. This comparison helps to determine the accuracy (criterion validity) of the newly obtained ED data.
