Definition:

This indicator combines the rates of three procedures: balloon angioplasty, cardiac stent insertion, and cardiac bypass surgery (though virtually all angioplasties are now accompanied by a stent insertion). Cardiac revascularization surgeries were defined by hospitalizations with ICD-9-CM codes 36.01, 36.02, 36.05, 36.06, 36.10-36.14 and 36.19 or CCI codes 1.IJ.50, 1.IJ.57 and 1.IJ.76 in any procedure field. These procedures were only performed at the two tertiary hospitals (Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital), so only hospital separations from those two hospitals were included in the analysis, in order to eliminate the potential for double-counting of procedures.
