The relative rate (RR), also called a rate ratio, is the ratio of the incidence rate of disease or death among the group exposed to the incidence rate of disease or death among the unexposed group.
In Martens et al., 2015, the group exposed were those who "ever smoked" and the group that was not exposed were those who "never smoked".
