Definition:

Mastectomy is the surgical removal of the entire breast, usually to treat serious breast disease, such as breast cancer. Lumpectomy (breast conserving surgery) involves the removal of a malignant tumor and the surrounding margin of normal breast tissue; lymph nodes in the armpit (axilla) may also be removed.
