Definition:

One of six diagnostic quality indicators (QIs). Events of fluid and electrolyte imbalances were counted using the ICD-9-CM code 276 in both the medical services/physician claims and the hospital discharge abstracts data. Events of this QI include disorders of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance. Examples include hyperosmosality and hyposmolality, acidosis and alkalosis, volume depletion and overload, as well as hyperpotassemia and hypopotassemia.
