Definition:

A term used to describe one of three distinct groups of people recognized as Aboriginal in the Constitution Act (1982), the others being Inuit and Métis. In addition, there are three legal definitions that apply to Indians in Canada: Status Indian, Non-Status Indian and Treaty Indians. The term "First Nation" has replaced this term in common usage.
