Definition:

A program, usually government-funded, for providing health care. In the US, it provides health insurance to people aged 65 and over and those who have permanent kidney failure and certain people with disabilities. In Canada, it is administered by each province (began in Saskatchewan in 1962) for all its residents. Australia has a similar system.
