The data used in this workshop can be found through the links below.
Some of the data however; are not available for free on the web
and must be obtained directly from the original source. If this
workshop is being done at MCHP then the additional unlinked files
are also available. Shape files are only listed as a single file
in the following descriptions – remember shape files may include
a number of associated files. Several of these files are old (e.g.
districts and RHAs) newer files should be used from the MCHP M:\public\geography
directory.
Most of the files used in this workshop were developed from geographic
boundary files, road networks, and point locations associated with
the 1996 census. These files were obtained through the University
of Manitoba Data Library Services. The files are based on the North
American Datum 1983 (NAD83). Users should note that there are small
differnces between boundary and point files from different sources
and over time. These differences may affect the suitability for
large scale maps and geocoding.
Some tabular data obtained from other sources may not be directly
useable within ArcGIS. An example of this is the Postal
Code Conversion File from Statistics Canada which comes as a
fixed record length text file. This file can be read into ArcGIS
by creating an appropriate entry in the schema.ini file or by converting
it to a different format using Excel. Using Excel is likely
faster and easier for one time conversions.
