Term: Healthcare Provider
Last Updated: 2012-11-05
A person or facility providing health care services in order to identify, prevent, or treat an illness or disability. This could include physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, hospitals, and clinics. (Frohlich et al., 2006).
In Heaman et al. (2012), this was developed as an indicator for the type of provider who was responsible for prenatal care and for delivery. Four provider types were identified: General or Family Practitioner, Obstetrician or Gynecologist, Midwife, or a Mix of Providers. See
Appendix Table A.4: Table of Codes - Health Care Provider for Delivery and Health Care Provider for Prenatal Care
for a detailed description of the methodology used.
