Term: Immunizations for Influenza (Adult)

Definition:

The proportion of residents age 65 or older who received immunization for influenza ('the flu') in a fiscal year. Annual 'flu shots' are recommended for all seniors 65+, along with other target groups (see the term Influenza Vaccinations / Influenza Immunization for more information).

Over time, flu shots are defined by tariff codes 8791, 8792, 8793 and 8799 in the Manitoba Immunization Monitoring System (MIMS) data - (see NOTE below).

NOTE:

• In the MIMS Annual Reports, a change in tariff codes is noted between 2004 and 2005. Four codes were used in 2004: 8791, 8792, 8793 and 8799. In 2005, only one code is used: 8791. In the 2013-2014 Annual Immunization report, they report using tariff codes 8791, 8792, 8969 and 9899 between Septmber 1, 2013 and April 4, 2014. • In Fransoo et al. (2005), the tariff codes used in this definition were slightly different than those reported by Manitoba Health. MCHP analysis did not include physician tariff code 8793. Upon re-analysis, it was determined that there were no claims entered in the data using the 8793 tariff code.
  
• In (Fransoo et al., 2009) and (Martens et al., 2010), the 8793 tariff code was included in the definition. However, in a September, 2010 communication with Penny Klassen of Manitoba Health, she indicated the 8793 tariff code is a historical code and is no longer used.
  
• In Hildeman et al. (2011), Fransoo et al. (2013), and Katz et al. (2014), the 8793 tariff code was not included in the list of tariff codes.
