Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2010-10-19

Definition:

The removal of a tooth from the mouth. Severe tooth decay is the most common reason for dental extractions. In MCHP research, this is limited to procedures taking place in a hospital and is measured only for children under the age of six (0-5 years old).

A limitation with this measure is that dental extractions performed in a surgery clinic or a private dentist's office cannot be identified because MCHP does not have this type of data in the Data Repository. In addition, out-of-province procedures are excluded.

For more detailed information, including the International Classification of Disease (ICD) and Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI) codes and other conditions used to define dental extractions, please see the concept Dental Surgeries / Dental Extractions to Treat Severe-Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) in Preschool Children.
