Definition:
Caused by the bacteria
Streptococcus pneumoniae
(pneumococcus), it is the leading cause of bacteremia, meningitis, and bacterial pneumonia. Pneumococcal disease is most common in the very young, the elderly, and certain high risk groups such as individuals with asplenia, immune deficiency, or a chronic illness.
