Term: Total Mortality by Cause & Injury Mortality by Cause
Last Updated: 2014-05-21
The most frequent causes of total mortality for Manitobans were reported for five calendar years, 2002-2006. Cause of death came from the
Vital Statistics Mortality Registry Data.
Due to the rarity of injury mortality events, the most frequent causes of injury mortality for Manitobans were reported for 10 calendar years, 1997-2006, double the time period for total mortality causes. Causes of death due to injury were identified from the Vital Statistics Mortality Registry Data and grouped into injury categories. See the
Injury Categories (External Causes, ICD-9-CM)
glossary term for more information on injury categories.
Causes of death in the Vital Statistics data are coded using ICD-9 codes from January 1, 1979 to December 31, 1999, and then coded using ICD-10 codes beginning in 2000. When necessary, injury deaths coded in ICD-10 were converted to ICD-9-CM codes before grouping them into injury categories.
Excluded from the count of deaths due to injury are those related to medical error and drug complications. See a detailed list of exclusions in the
External Cause of Injury Codes and Categories
concept.
