Definition:

The Elixhauser Comorbidity Index is a method for measuring patient comorbidity based on ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 diagnosis codes found in administrative data. This instrument is meant to be used with large administrative data sets to predict hospital resource use and in-hospital mortality (Elixhauser et al., 1998).
