Definition:

"The risk of death during the newborn period - the first 28 days of life." (Olds SB et al., 2004).

In Heaman et al. (2012), they developed and investigated a number of severe neonatal morbidities, including: neonatal sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), convulsions of newborn, brachial plexus injury/palsy, persistent fetal circulation/neonatal hypertension, grade III or IV intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)/ periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), intubation, gastroschisis, omphalocele, diaphragmatic hernia, and congenital malformations of the circulatory system.
