Definition:
The number of individuals who made contact with a physician during a specified time period (and/or within other specified criteria).
For example:

Tataryn et al. (1994)
considered contact with a physician to be at least one ambulatory contact with a physician during the year.

Contact with physicians outside of hospital, within 30 days of discharge was used as the criteria for
Roos et al. (1994)
