Definition:
Level of care is a classification for hospitalizations according to type of care received (Fransoo et al., 2013). In Manitoba, the level of care is collected in the Hospital Discharge Abstract data as a one-digit code, using the following codes and descriptions:
0 - Acute Care, adult and child,
1 - Day Surgery, adult and child,
2 - Rehabilitative Care,
3 - Chronic Care (Riverview Health Centre and Deer Lodge Centre only),
4 - Personal Care Home (PCH (nursing home)
5 - Psychiatric Facilities,
6 - Acute Care, paediatric (Winnipeg Children's Hospital only),
7 - Day Surgery, paediatric (Winnipeg Children's Hospital only), and
8 - Ambulatory care (Emergency department and outpatient department), and
9 - Provincially defined (includes clinics, Grace Hospital, Hospice Unit).
NOTE:
Level of care is collected as the second digit in the "Institution Number", "Institution From" and "Institution To" variables (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2004).
