Last Updated: 2020-05-19
Definition:
The crude percentage of patients with a diagnosis of
acute myocardial infarction
in five years of hospital discharge abstracts who filled at least one prescription for a

within four months of their AMI. To be included in the denominator, patients had to be alive for the entire follow-up period.
Patients with the following diagnoses in hospital in the three years prior to the index event are excluded because beta-blockers are contra-indicated for patients with these conditions:
-
asthma (ICD-9-CM diagnosis code 493 or ICD-10-CA code J45),
-
COPD (ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes 491 and 492 or ICD-10-CA codes J41-J44) or
- peripheral vascular disease (ICD-9-CM diagnosis code 443 and 459 or ICD-10-CA codes I73, I79.2, and I87).
