Term: Surgical Outpatients
Glossary Definition
Last Updated: 2007-09-26
Definition:
Patients who receive surgical care as an outpatient (i.e. care that falls into one of the surgical DRG categories). Includes surgical procedures that could have been alternately performed on an inpatient basis (e.g. cataract surgery and hernia repair), but excludes minor procedures (e.g. toenail removal or skin biopsy). This has also been defined as patients identified in Hospital Discharge Abstracts data as outpatients who underwent surgery (based on Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs)™) in an operating room.
