Term: Teenage Pregnancy Rate

Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2009-02-12

Definition:

The teen pregnancy rate was calculated using data from hospital records by taking the ratio of all live and stillbirths, abortions and ectopic pregnancies for females aged 15 to 19 years to the total female population of the same age. No adjustment for age or sex was necessary, so only crude rates are provided. Teen pregnancy rates were also calculated for 12- to 19-year-old females, however the rate of teen pregnancy for females under 15 was very low; the patterns were similar to the 15- to 19-year-old female rates and so only the latter were reported. (Brownell et al., 2008). For a list of ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CA diagnoses codes used to identify pregnancy in the Child Health Atlas Update (2008), please see the Links section below.

Different age ranges have been used in other research projects. Please read the Teenage Pregnancy concept for more information.
