Definition:

ICD-10-CA is based on the 10th version of the ICD (International Classification of Disease) coding system, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) that is used to classify diseases and related health problems (morbidity), but includes enhancements developed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for use in Canadian hospitals and other Canadian medical facilities. The Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI) is the companion classification system to ICD-10-CA for coding procedures / interventions in Canada. ICD-10-CA and CCI are being used in Manitoba hospital discharge abstracts data beginning April 1, 2004.

ICD-10-CA is divided into 23 chapters. Individual codes start with a letter followed by two numbers. A further standard sub-classification includes a fourth character. The general format is A##### (A##.###) where the letter (A) indicates the chapter, and the pound signs (#) represent numeric values.

Differences Between ICD-10 and ICD-10-CA

At the four character level ICD-10 and ICD-10-CA are identical, although there are some differences in the interpretation or use of some codes. For example, HIV related codes B20-B23 are coded as B24 by CIHI. NOTE: ICD-10-CA and ICD-10 are similar to the 4th digit, but they are not the same.
While ICD-10-CA can be coded to 6 characters in the hospital data, only the first four characters (ICD-10) are used in the Vital Statistics Mortality Registry data. CIHI has reserved 7 characters for future expansion of the codes.
