Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2023-03-29

Definition:

The period of time each year when most Kindergarten to grade 12 students attend school sessions, usually from early September to late June. The terms Academic Year and School Year have been used interchangeably in MCHP research.

From a programming perspective, in the Enrollment, Marks and Assessments (STS/ICAB) data the variables ACADYEAR (academic year) and ACQSET (acquisition set) contain values represented by four character digits (e.g. 2020) corresponding to the beginning year of an entire school year. In the example, ACADYEAR with a value = 2020 indicates the school year from September 2020 to June 2021.

For more specific information related to dates within the academic school year, see the Manitoba Education Web Site - Manitoba School Divisions and Districts: School Calendar Dates. - accessed October 11, 2012
