Definition:

The number of deaths of live born babies weighing 500 grams or more within 27 days of birth per 1,000 live births. Note: This weight is consistent with definitions used by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

The primary cause of neotnatal death, identified from the Vital Statistics data, were grouped into the following categories: Congenital Anomalies, Short Gestation/Low Birth Weight, Complications of Labour, Maternal Conditions/Complications, Infectious/Parasitic, Respiratory System, Fetal Hemorrhage, Other (includes all reasons not elsewhere classified) and Missing Reason for Death. See Appendix Table A.4: Table of Codes - Causes of Neonatal and Postneonatal Death for a list of ICD-10-CA codes used for each of these categories.
