Definition:

A First Nation (community) that is governed under the Indian Act (1876) on the condition of having reserve land, having a trust fund held by the government for the community’s use and benefit, or being declared as a band by the Governor General ( Legal Line , 2019; Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, 2017). This term is specific to the Indian Act (1876) and is used rarely today.
