Term: Odds Ratio

Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2013-10-04

Definition:

The ratio of the odds (likelihood) of an event occurring in one group to the odds of it occurring in another group, or to a data-based estimate of that ratio (e.g.: from a logistic regression model). These groups might be men and women, an experimental group and a control group, or any other dichotomous classification (Lix et al. (2006)).

In models with multiple variables, the adjusted odds ratio shows the effect of that variable after controlling for the influences of other variables in the model (e.g., age, sex) (Fransoo et al. (2013)).
