Definition:

Care provided for weekend or extended periods (e.g.: vacation) for the relief of family members who regularly provide extensive care to a family member. Such care is based on a Home Care assessment and may be provided at home as a Home Care service or through temporary placement into a Personal Care Home (PCH) or hospital providing respite care.

It is also called Family Relief (Roos et al., 2001). In DeCoster et al. (1996), respite care is used to describes one of 13 alternate levels of care (ALC) to acute care.
