Definition:

This is a dichotomous measure of whether a mother used any substances (e.g., alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking) during her pregnancy. This measure was derived from hospital abstracts and physician visits data (see the Substance Abuse concept for a list of ICD codes used to identify subtance abuse), and from self-reported maternal substance abuse information collected on the BabyFirst or Families First newborn screening form.
