Definition:

Cataract surgery involves replacing the lens of the eye with an artificial lens. The clouded lens is removed in its entirety by surgery and replaced with an intraocular lens made of plastic, an operation that takes less than an hour and usually does not need overnight stay in hospital. See MedlinePlus® - Health Topics - Cataract for more information.

Over time, MCHP research has used different methods to identify cataract surgery. Please see the Cataract Surgery concept for more detailed information about these methods.
