Definition:

Surgical procedure that reroutes blood around a blocked coronary artery using a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body, thereby improving oxygen and blood flow to the heart. CABG is defined using ICD-9-CM procedure codes 36.10, 36.11, 36.12, 36.13, 36.14, 36.15, 36.16, 36.17 and 36.19, or CCI code 1.IJ.76 in any procedure field.

Note: Bypass surgeries were only performed at the two tertiary hospitals (Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital), so only hospital separations from those two hospitals were included in the analysis, in order to eliminate the potential for double-counting of procedures (Fransoo et al., 2009).
