Term: Long Stay Days

Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2011-05-30

Definition:

The total number of days of hospital care used by all residents of a given region of stays 30 days or longer within a given fiscal year ( Martens et al., 2004 ).

Recent Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) research by Fransoo et al. (2005) has used this definition. Previous MCHP research by Roos et al. (1994) and Brownell et al. (1996) considered long stay days to be the total number of days of hospital care used by all residents of a given region of stays 60 days or longer.

This change may have been influenced by findings by De Coster et al. (1996) showing that only 27% of inpatients required acute care after 30 days of hospital stay.
