Term: Lower Limb Amputations with Comorbid Diabetes

Definition:

The removal of the lower limb (below or including the knee) by amputation, in combination with a diagnosis of diabetes. Rates are expressed per 1,000 area residents age 20 through 79 (denominator includes both diabetics and non-diabetics).

NOTE: in some MCHP research, this term is called "Lower Limb Amputations Among People/Residents with Diabetes".

Lower limb amputation is recorded in the Hospital Abstracts data and is defined by:

• ICD-9-CM procedure codes 84.10-84.17 OR
  
• CCI codes: 1.VC.93, 1.VG.93, 1.VQ.93, 1.WA.93, 1.WE.93, 1.WJ.93, 1.WL.93, 1.WM.93 in any procedure / intervention field over five years of hospitalizations. NOTE: Different CCI codes have been used over time. For example, in 2019 research by Fransoo et al., CCI codes 1.WK.93 and 1.WN.93 were added, and 1.WL.93 was not included.
  
  NOTE: The hospital abstract with the amputation code must be combined with a diagnosis of diabetes in any diagnosis field, defined by ICD-9-CM diagnosis code 250 or ICD-10-CA codes E10-E14, or one or more prescriptions for medications to treat diabetes (see the Diabetes -Measuring Prevalence concept for more information on how diabetes is defined).

• This definition does not include all amputations, but only those for which there was an existing condition of diabetes coded with the amputation.
  
• Amputations due to accidental injury, defined by:
  
  • ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes 895, 896, 897 OR
    
  • ICD-10-CA codes: S78, S88, S98, T05.3, T05.4, T05.5, T13.6 are excluded.
  
  
• In Chartier et al. (2015), the age range included adults 18 years and older. The number of events among children aged 0-17 years old was too low to report. They also excluded interventions that were coded as out-of-hospital.
