Definition:

The maternal abstract is a hospital discharge abstract with an abstract type = "Obstetrical" (3). The maternal abstract contains patient demographic data and data relating to the mother's pregnancy/birthing experience, such as parity and gravidity; ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CA diagnostic codes defining the outcome of delivery and morbidity associated with pregnancy, labor and delivery; ICD-9-CM procedure or CCI intervention codes describing method of delivery; and perinatal obstetrical interventions, prenatal care information, and risk assessment services.
