Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2020-05-20

Definition:

This indicator provides information regarding where hospital patients came from with respect to geographic regions. It measures the percent of all hospital separations by all hospitals in each Regional Health Authority (RHA) that were provided to residents:

  • of the (home) RHA,
  • another RHA,
  • Winnipeg, or
  • out-of-province residents.
If a patient was transferred between hospitals, each stay was counted as a separate event and was attributed to the appropriate hospital. Area residence was assigned based on the patient’s postal code provided in the hospital abstract at the time of hospitalization.

In Chartier et al. (2012), this term was called Catchment: Where Patients Came from for Separations.
