Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2020-05-20

Definition:

The percent of area residents who were admitted to an acute care hospital at least once in a fiscal year. All inpatient hospitalizations of area residents were included regardless of the location of the hospital; day surgery and outpatient services are excluded. All Manitoba hospitals are included. Personal care homes (PCHs), nursing stations, and long-term care facilities are excluded (Deer Lodge Centre, Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre, Rehabilitation Centre for Children, and Riverview Health Centre). Out-of-province hospitalizations for Manitoba residents are also included. In cases of births, newborn hospitalizations are excluded, but the mother's hospitalization is included.

Values are age- and sex-adjusted to the Manitoba population. This measure gives an indication of the accessibility of hospital care for local residents.
