Definition:

A term that describes a wide range of effects that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol during pregnancy (Chudley et al., 2005). Some of these effects last a lifetime and may include physical, mental, behavioural, and cognitive disabilities (Streissguth et al., 2004).

In Brownell et al. (2012), FASD was defined for children aged 0 to 19 with a diagnosis of 'ARND' (alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder), 'ARND/ARBD' (alcohol-related birth defects), 'FAS' (fetal alcohol syndrome), 'FAS/ARBD', or 'Partial FAS', which are diagnostic categories taken from the Manitoba FASD Centre clinical database.
