Definition:

This indicator measures the percentage of women with newborns who self-reported consuming alcoholic beverages during pregnancy on the Families First Screening (FFS) Form.

Additional information about prenatal alcohol use can be found in the Hospital Abstracts and Medical Services / Physician Claims data, if the mother is admitted to hospital, or has a physician/provider visit during the gestation period, and has one of the following codes recorded: ICD-9-CM code 303 or ICD-10-CA code F10 (alcohol abuse). There is also a OBS_ETOH (alcohol use during pregnancy) variable on the maternal delivery record, available from 2004/05 onward.

In the deliverable by Ruth et al. (2015), they used data from the FFS and an indicator from the hospital abstract data to calculate a measure of any alcohol use in pregnancy. They also measured the frequency of alcohol use and the usual number of drinks before and during pregnancy from the FFS data, and provided three additional measures: no alcohol use in pregnancy, low risk or no alcohol use in pregnancy, and high risk alcohol use prior to pregnancy.
