Definition:

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, despair, and discouragement. It is closely associated with a lack of confidence and self-esteem, an inability to express strong feelings. These feelings interfere with daily life for an extended period of time (Miller & Keane, 2003). The quality-of-care indicator used at MCHP is limited to patients with more severe depression and requiring the use of antidepressant medication.

For specific ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CA and ATC codes see the Depression - Defining in Administrative Data concept.
