Glossary Definition

Last Updated: 2011-06-02

Definition:

Usually refers to the total number of days related to inpatient hospital stays that are less than 60 days ( Brownell et al., 1996 ; Roos et al., 1994 ). This cut-off can vary with the study depending on the research question being asked.

Fransoo et al. (2005) and Martens et al. (2004) defined short stay days as the total number of days of hospital care used by all residents of a given region for stays less than 30 days within a fiscal year. Surgical outpatients were excluded.
