Definition:

Death of a baby before delivery. Also referred to as Stillborn or fetal death. In Heaman et al. (2012), a stillbirth was identified as a fetal death with a gestation of 20 weeks or greater or a birth weight of at least 500 grams.

In Brownell et al. (2008), stillbirth rates are calculated for gestational ages as early as 20 weeks. International Classification of Disease (ICD) diagnoses codes for pregnancy delivery outcomes, including stillbirth codes, are available from the Links section below.
