Last Updated: 2014-10-14

Definition:

A discrete probability distribution appropriate for analyzing count data when an event is relatively rare, but is highly variable over the entire population. The negative binomial distribution is often employed in regression analyses when the Poisson distribution results in an over-dispersed model - e.g.: when the variance is greater than the mean.
