Definition:

Grade repetition is continuation in a school program at the same grade level for part or all of the next school year due to failing to acquire the minimum expectations or outcomes to proceed to the next grade level.

In Brownell et al. (2012), grade repetition was defined as the percent of students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 who have been enrolled in the same grade for two or more consecutive academic years and who did not have an aberrant pattern of grade promotion any other year (e.g., retention one year and promotion of two grades the next). Grade repetition was calculated over five-year periods using academic years from 2000 through 2008 (school years 2000/01 through 2008/09).

NOTE: In MCHP research over time, this situation has also been called Continuing Student, Grade Retention and Retention.
