Last Updated: 2020-02-20

Definition:

The number of hospital discharges/episodes in a given year(s) divided by the population in a given region. This is usually expressed per 1000, but note that the use of 1000 as a base is arbitrary. The base is usually chosen so that the event is expressed as a whole number.

The number of inpatient hospital episodes per 100 person years. Excludes non acute-care facilities. Chateau et al., 2019
