Definition:

Household income is the total annual gross income for all people living in the same household.

This information is available from different survey data and is reported in different ways. For example:

• The Canadian Census allows a person to enter the exact dollar amount for household income;
  
  
• The Manitoba Heart Health Survey (MHHS) allows a range of possible responses:
  
  • "under $12,000",
    
  • "$12,000 to $24,999",
    
  • "$25,000 to $49,999",
    
  • "$50,000 to $74,999", or
    
  • "$75,000 and over".
  
  
• The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) and Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) allows "less than $40,000" or "$40,000 or more". Based on the initial answer, a derived variable for household income was calculated that grouped household income as:
  
  • "no income",
    
  • "less than $5,000",
    
  • "$5,000-$9,999",
    
  • "$10,000-$14,999",
    
  • "$15,000-$19,999",
    
  • "$20,000-$29,999",
    
  • "$30,000-$39,999",
    
  • "$40,000-$49,999",
    
  • "$50,000-$59,999",
    
  • "$60,000-$79,999", or
    
  • "$80,000 or more".
