Term: International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Chapters
Glossary Definition
Last Updated: 2013-10-30
Definition:
The International Classification of Disease (ICD) coding system divides diseases and health conditions into similar categories based on body systems and health conditions. These categories are represented by different chapters in the ICD documentation. For some indicators used in MCHP research, the individual ICD Chapters have been used to classify these diseases and conditions. In addition, over time, changes to the ICD coding system have led to the capture of different versions of ICD data.

In some research, to allow fair comparisons overtime, diagnoses and causes of death coded in ICD-10 and ICD-10-CA are converted to ICD-9-CM codes and then grouped according to the ICD-9-CM chapters.
